European vs American Roulette

Before you learn to play Roulette, you need to know which version of the game you are playing. There are actually numerous versions of the popular online casino game, the most prevalent being European Roulette and American Roulette.

American Roulette and its European cousin have very much in common, with one slight diversion in the rules. In American Roulette, there are 38 numbers in all, 1-36, the single zero (0) and the double zero (00). European Roulette actually gives the player a slightly lower house edge to compete with by omitting the double zero (00). Only 37 numbers exist on the table and wheel, 1-36 and the single zero (0).

If you scroll down to our free integrated Roulette game, you’ll notice a large, spinning wheel in the top left corner. This is the Roulette Wheel. Observe the wheel for a moment and you’ll notice a few patterns taking place. First, the numbers alternate from red to black (aside from the green, single zero (0). They also alternate high to low, 19-36 being high, 1-18 being low. The end result being, there is really no advantage to betting on specific groups.

The Roulette Table

Next we’ll learn about the Roulette Table, where all of the betting action takes place. Allow your eyes to scan down below the Roulette Wheel in our free integrated Roulette game, and you’ll see a large diagram, depicting the same numbers and colors we found on the Roulette Wheel, except that this time, there is some semblance of order.

All of the numbers, 0 and 1-36, are placed in sequence. Outside the numbered diagram is selection of grouped bets. For example, 1st-12 is a bet on 1 through 12. Opposite the wheel is three row bets, stretching the length of the table. 19-36 is a bet on all high numbers from 19 through 36. Red, Black, Odd and Even are pretty self-explanatory. Note that none of these ‘Outside’ group bets includes the zero (0). The zero (0) is not considered low, even or otherwise.

Here is one more betting area often found in some European Roulette games, this time following the pattern of the wheel. These betting groups are adapted from French Roulette. The full wheel is broken into three sections, labeled “Voisins du Zero”, “Orphans” and “Tiers du Cylindre”.

Voisins du Zero allows the bettor to place adjacent, two-number bets and interesting 3-number bets on each of the 16 numbers surrounding the zero (0) on the Roulette Wheel. Tiers du Cylindre refers the 12 numbers opposite the zero (0) in the Roulette Wheel. Orphans are the remaining 8 numbers not included in Voisins or Tiers.

Betting Rules and Pay Table

It is also important to understand Roulette’s betting rules, as they pertain to the minimum and maximum amounts a player is allowed to wager on any given spin of the wheel. Learn to Play Roulette

And now for the most exciting part of our online casino lesson in learning to play Roulette, we’d like to teach you how to practice playing roulette on our free integrated Roulette games, provided by Bodog Casino and 888 Casino.

The first thing you’ll want to look for is the coin denominations, displayed in the bottom center of the game screen. Choices include $1, $5, $25 and $100. Click on the chip size you'd like to wager. Each time you click a betting area on the table, the chosen coin size will be wagered. Clicking the same area twice will result in a double wager. For example, choose the $5 coin and click 3rd-12 twice to wager $10 on 3rd-12.

Next, click on the area of the Roulette Table betting diagram in which you'd like to place a wager. Continue placing chips on the table until you are ready to spin the wheel. If you place a chip in the wrong position, click "Remove Chip" in the bottom right corner, then click the chip(s) you wish the remove. If you want to start over completely, removing all chips from the table, click the "Clear All" button in the bottom right corner.

When you are ready, click the "Spin" button in the bottom left corner. The white ball begins to spin around the Roulette Wheel until landing in a pocket. All lost chips are removed from the table; all winning bets remain. You winnings, if any, are revealed in the middle left of the screen. You may begin placing new bets, or click "Repeat" in the bottom left corner, to place the exact same bets over again.
